The plant is made up of rosettes with thorn-edged leaves, between 15 and 25 centimetres high. The flowers, which appear in summer, have a red stalk and three violet petals. It grows in sunny rock gardens on stone in a highly draining mix with only 1/3 soil, the rest being granite arena and gravel, all covered with pozzolana.
