It grows as an epiphyte in temperate Valdivian forests. It grows slowly, forming a clump two or three meters wide in around twenty years. Evergreen foliage. The leaves, which are longer than the type, are edged with prickles. In our garden, it grows on the ground or in a rock hollow.
